Idaho Medical Academy’s in-person EMT Course provides Treasure Valley students an opportunity to learn the knowledge and skills necessary to become a nationally registered EMT, and start an exciting career in EMS, Fire, or healthcare.

Cohorts run on two schedules so you can train around work or school. You choose your cohort and start time when you register.

Idaho Medical Academy is an approved EMS education program recognized by the Idaho Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
What you earn at the end of the course is not an Idaho credential. You earn National Registry (NREMT) EMT certification, the national standard for entry-level EMTs and the credential Idaho and most other states use as the basis for initial EMT licensure.
Finish your classroom hours, skills days, and clinical field experience requirements at IMA’s Boise Campus.
Complete your NREMT psychomotor testing requirements during lab and skills days.
After completing the course, schedule and take the NREMT written exam to become a nationally registered EMT.
Once you’ve received your NREMT certification, apply for licensure through the Idaho Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.

The following criteria must be met in order to enroll in IMA’s Emergency Medical Technician course:
A high school diploma or GED and U.S. citizenship or legal residency are employment requirements for most EMS positions. They are not requirements to enroll in this course or to earn National Registry certification.
Most students come to the in-person course with one of these goals.

Idaho Medical Academy’s highly-popular Online Self-Paced EMT Course covers the same curriculum, costs the same tuition, includes the same certifications, and leads to the same National Registry EMT certification. You start the day you enroll and work through the didactic coursework online, at your own pace, then complete your hands-on requirements during a four-day Skills Week.

The EMT course at our Boise campus is $1,650. That includes classroom instruction, skills lab days, clinical field experience, study groups, and AHA Healthcare Provider CPR, HazMat Awareness, Landing Zone Officer, and Extrication Awareness certifications. Payment plans are available.
The standard two-day-a-week course runs 3 to 4 months, from your first class to your final skills day. The accelerated course covers the same material in about ten weeks and is offered in spring and summer. After the course you still need to pass the National Registry cognitive exam and apply to the Idaho Bureau of Emergency Medical Services for your license, which includes a background check that can take up to eight weeks.
Complete an approved EMS education course, pass the National Registry cognitive exam, complete the psychomotor requirement, then apply to the Idaho Bureau of Emergency Medical Services for licensure. A background check is required. There is no state licensure fee at the EMT level. An Idaho EMT license is valid for three years.
No. There is no maximum age for EMT certification. Idaho Medical Academy trains students who are starting a first career and students who are changing careers later, and both are common in our Boise cohorts.
You must be at least 16 years old to enroll, with guardian approval if you are under 18. There is no maximum age.
Felony convictions disqualify you from enrolling at Idaho Medical Academy. Enrollment also requires consent to a criminal history background check and possible drug testing. Idaho state licensure requires a separate background check through the Background Check Unit, which can take up to eight weeks.
No. AHA Healthcare Provider CPR certification is included in the EMT course. You do not need to obtain it beforehand.
Patient assessment, airway management, bleeding control and trauma care, spinal motion restriction, medical emergencies, childbirth, and the operational side of working on an ambulance. You practice all of it in the skills lab before you are tested on it.
At our Boise campus, across your scheduled skills lab days. Each lab day counts toward the psychomotor requirement, so you practice and are signed off on the skills over the length of the course rather than in one block at the end.
Yes. Idaho Medical Academy is an approved EMS education program recognized by the Idaho Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
Idaho Medical Academy is a private training program and tuition applies. Some fire departments and ambulance services sponsor employee training, so if you already work for an agency it is worth asking whether they cover tuition. Payment plans are available.
Not at the EMT level. IV therapy is within the Advanced EMT scope in Idaho. Idaho Medical Academy offers an AEMT course for EMTs who want to advance.

No. We no longer offer a hybrid format, but IMA’s self-paced EMT course includes an online didactic component with a 4-day Skills Week. It is a popular format for students requiring a flexible schedule, or wishing to learn at their own pace.
