Idaho Medical Academy’s Self-paced Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Course Online is designed to allow you to earn your AEMT certification at your own pace. The hands-on skills and psychomotor training will conclude your AEMT course after all online material is completed. This portion of your course takes place over a week. IMA ensures that during your hands-on skills lab week you will be training with experienced, providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to obtain NREMT certification by completing your online AEMT course?

Yes, upon completion of all phases of the IMA Online AEMT course (didactic, skills, clinical rotations) you will be approved to schedule your NREMT cognitive exam. Successful completion of the NREMT cognitive exam will result in NREMT certification.

How long does the course take?

The time it takes to complete the course varies from student to student. Most students complete the online course within 3-4 months. The skills portion of the course takes 5 days and can only be attended after completion of the online portion of the course. Clinical rotation scheduling is dependent on student and site availability.

When can I start my course?

Students are given access to the online portion of the course by email immediately after completing the course registration process and payment.

I work for an ALS department. Can I learn my skills at my department instead of attending the IMA skills week?

No, skills week is a requirement for all students.

I live in a different state, can I do clinical rotations at a site in my area?

Yes, students may do clinical rotations in their area if they prefer. It will be the students responsibility to find and confirm a clinical site in their area if they would like to do clinical rotations outside of one of our current clinical partners.

Course Requirements:

18 years of age or older.
Hold current National Certification at EMT level or a current State EMT Certification (verified)
Verification from the Program Director that you hold Basic Life Support CPR certification (AHA or equivalent)
Holds a High School Diploma or GED
The following immunizations

Hepatitis B (vaccine or waiver)
Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) vaccine
TDap (vaccine or positive titer)
Flu Shot (current year)
Tuberculosis (negative TB test)
Covid (proof of two rounds required)

The clinical site may allow waivers for certain immunizations (COVID for example). Clinical sites allow student to apply skills they learn during lab in real world situations. IMA ensures that during your skill labs you will be training with experienced providers.

Please confirm clinical sites before scheduling travel arrangements for skills week/clinicals.
If you wish to request a local site for clinicals, please have a contact name/email/phone ready to provide for your desired site.
It will be the student's responsibility to find clinical sites outside the Boise area to complete clinical hours if desired. IMA staff will work with clinical sites as needed to fulfill legal obligations if required.

IMA ‘s AEMT course will consist of online material and in person hands-on skills labs. For your convenience, please review our course structure as follows:

Example AEMT Course Format

Student signs up for January skills lab (2nd – 6th) 3 months in advance
Student completes online didactic material
Student comes in for skills lab
Student completes skills lab and attends clinical rotations (starting Jan 7th)
Student completes clinical rotations (Feb 7th)
Student registers for and takes NREMT cognitive exam

Objectives:

Program Cognitive Objective:

At the completion of the program, the student will demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate the clinical information relative to his/her role as an entry level Advanced EMT.

Program Psychomotor Objective:

At the completion of the program, the student will demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of an entry level Advanced EMT.

Program Affective Objective:

At the completion of the program, the student will demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with professional and employer expectations for the entry level Advanced EMT.

Idaho Medical Academy LLC is recognized as a training institution by the Idaho Department of Emergency Medical Services and is registered as a proprietary school with the Idaho State Board of Education.

This course was designed in accordance with the National Registry and State of Idaho AEMT Curriculum. This course will provide education in the treatment and transport of ill and injured patients in the emergency setting. Additionally, successful completion of this course will make the student eligible to take the exams required to obtain a national certification as an AEMT. This course includes lectures, demonstrations, practical skills, instruction and clinical hours. Clinical hours are mandatory and are in addition to scheduled class time.

Idaho Medical Academy’s Advanced EMT Course will prepare you for:

Basic airway management
Insertion of a supra-glottic airway
Suctioning an intubated patient
Usage of a CPAP device
Initiation of peripheral intravenous therapy
Administration of non-medicated intravenous fluids
Pediatric and adult intra-osseous placement
Concept of needle decompression of a tension pneumothorax
Pharmacological interventions beyond the Basic EMT level:
Administration of nitroglycerine by the sublingual route
Administration of epinephrine 1:1,000 for anaphylaxis and 1:10,000 for cardiac arrest
Administration of Dextrose 50%, Dextrose 25%, and glucagon for a diabetic emergency
Administration of naloxone for opioid overdose
Administration of nitrous oxide for pain management
Administration of inhaled beta-agonist medications such as albuterol and ipratropium for respiratory emergencies caused by asthma, COPD, etc.

You will learn through theory and practical application how to be professional Emergency Medical Technicians at an advanced level of care. Students are prepared through lecture, laboratory, and clinical experiences.

Graduates from this program receive an Advance EMT Certificate of Completion from Idaho Medical Academy. Successful completion of the program allows students to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Advanced EMT certification examination and apply for licensure as an Advanced EMT.
